Charlotte & David {Married!}

Ye Olde Bell near Retford was the beautiful location for Charlotte & David’s winter wedding reception. The reception had followed their wedding service at the picturesque St Wilfrid’s church in Cantley, on the outskirts of Doncaster.

I love photographing winter weddings, especially when there is low directional sun around and on this occasion, near gale force winds! By allowing the wind to take hold, I was able to harness the drama that such weather can introduce into photography. Despite not having the luxury that I had (thermal clothing!), neither Charlotte nor David complained once about being photographed in the arctic chill!

Ellie & Chech {married}

The wedding of Ellie & Uchechi was a truly international affair, with guests flying in from as far away as Nigeria and the United States to celebrate the union of the newly-weds. It was a real honour and pleasure to document and photograph their wedding day.

Ellie & Chech were married at historic Christ Church in Dore, on the outskirts of Sheffield. The following wedding reception was held a couple of miles from Dore at the stunning Whirlowbrook Hall

Gemma & Stevie {Married}

Gorgeous sunshine from sunrise to sunset – how rare is that for a wedding! Gemma & Stevie were blessed with beautiful conditions when they recently married at Tankerlsey Manor Hotel, near Sheffield.

One of the star’s of Gemma & Stevie’s engagement photo shoot was their beautiful German Sheppard Jess. She also made a cameo appearance at the wedding; as the ring bearer no less!

Stevie helped keep the wedding guests cool by serving fresh ice cream from their very own ice cream van that they’d hired for the day!

Emma & Spike {Married!}

I have photographed many weddings over the years, but I can’t think of many that were as fun as Emma & Spike’s – You just have to look at the photos to see what i mean! They tied the knot at the Emmanuel Church, Loughborough, before hosting their wedding reception at the beautiful Quorn Grange Hotel, near Leicester. I photographed their pre-wedding photo shoot just a couple of weeks prior. Emma & Spike are like a comedy duo, and had me in stitches for most of the day, before flying of to the beautiful Caribbean island of Barbados – I’m only slightly jealous!

Lauren & Ben {Married}

Every once in while, a wedding comes along, and everything is just incredible to photograph! Lauren & Ben’s beautiful wedding at Aston Hall in Sheffield was certainly such an occasion! From the moment that I pulled back my curtains early in the morning and saw the gorgeous sunshine, viewing Lauren’s vintage wedding dress, the bespoke handmade stationary the couple had ordered, through to the beautiful location of Aston Hall itself, and the stunning evening sunset, everything was just right.

I just loved every second of being with Lauren & Ben and photographing them. The ‘posed’ images of the couple took just ten minutes – just the way, Lauren & Ben (and myself!) wanted it to be!

Marie & Brian {Married}

I recently photographed one of the most moving weddings that I have ever had the honour to capture. Marie contacted me just 3 weeks prior to her wedding to Brian to see if I was available to photograph their big day. Marie’s father, Tommy, is suffering from cancer, and her dream was for him to walk her down the aisle. Her dream came true on March 5th as Tommy proudly walked Marie down the aisle towards her husband to be – Brian.

The church service took place at St Margaret’s church in Swinton, near Rotherham, with the wedding breakfast and reception at Warmsworth Holiday Inn, near Doncaster. Some vicars can be quite obstructive towards photography during the ceremony, however, Father Barley couldn’t have been more accommodating to both myself and the guests. I just wish every vicar was as helpful!

The only downside to the day, was the weather which varied between heavy clouds and rain, not this effected Marie & Brian in anyway. When they arrived at Warmsworth Holiday Inn for the reception, I spent 10 minutes with the newly weds down at Warmsworth Hall and quickly captured a selection of ‘posed’ images. Both Marie & Brian wanted their wedding photography to be as natural and relaxed as possible, which suited me down to the ground.

Despite his illness, Tommy not only walked Marie down the aisle, but stayed throughout the wedding breakfast and in to the evening reception. I’ll never forget the courage and love that he showed Marie & Brian on their big day.

Marie & Bryn {Married!}

The stunning Linden Hall in Northumberland was the venue for my final winter wedding of 2010. The wedding took place between Christmas and New Yea, when I had the pleasure of photographing Marie & Bryn’s big day. Linden Hall is situated north of Newcastle, just outside Jesmond. Although the happy couple live down in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Bryn had proposed the previous year on a beautiful deserted beach in Northumberland. Having searched for the perfect venue nearby, they came across Linden Hall and fell in love with it. Having photographed there, I can now see why!

You couldn’t meet a nicer and more friendly couple than Marie and Bryn. Nothing was too much trouble for them. When I asked Marie if she minded if I photographed her in the snow, she jumped at the chance and put her wellies on! I just wish that I’d brought mine with me, as I had the most porous and cold shoes on that I could have picked! The shots that we got were more than worth it though! Marie & Bryn went out of their way to make me feel part of their big day. You only have to look at the wedding photos below to see just how much fun the couple (and their guests) had throughout the day.

For the photographers who read my blog, the wedding was photographed using just two prime lenses throughout the day; the new Nikon 35mm and 85mm f1.4s. Wedding photography in winter gives you the added pressure of photographing in diminishing light. You could simply pop a flash gun on top of your camera and get ‘ok-ish’ shots, or you can work for your money and seek out just the right quality of the ambient light. By using high ISOs and high apertures (low f stops), there is still no reason to use flash. That is my honest opinion, although others may argue otherwise. Ultra high apertures allow light to flood into the camera’s sensor and also enables you to generate gorgeous out of focus ‘bokeh’ behind your subject.

Annoushka & Chris {Married!}

I jumped in my car, ready to head south to the Priest House Hotel in Donington. As I turned the ignition key on my car, the temperature said -10C! Luckily, most of the snow from the previous week had vanished, otherwise, a two hour journey would have taken 6 hours, and I’d have needed a JCB to get me out of my street! Despite the freezing and rather murky weather, I had a fantastic time photographing the gorgeous wedding of Annoushka and Chris. The bride and groom’s pre- wedding shoot a couple of months back, was also photographed at The Priest House. Annoushka and Chris are such a warm and happy go lucky couple. We re-enacted some of the pre shoot photos with the chalk board during the wedding reception in the photo booth. You only have to count the amount of smiles and laughs in the wedding photos below to see what a perfect match Annoushka and Chris are!

Kristie & Pete {Married}

A bride’s worst nightmare, a giant cold sore!! This was what Kristie phoned me to tell me a few days before her wedding to Pete. The panic in her voice was for real! I reassured her that things would be fine, and with the help of mother nature, a touch of concealer, and carefully taken wedding photography, when the big day came, nobody could tell – she looked simply stunning! Kristie & Pete became husband and wife at their local Edlington Catholic Church. The venue for the beautiful wedding reception which followed, was at the Warmsworth Holiday Inn, adjacent to Warmsworth Hall, Doncaster.

I’ve known Kristie for a few years now, and her mother Fiona for even longer. Fiona in particular was so so proud of her daughter on her wedding day. The heavens had threatened to open throughout the day, but luckily, the rain held off. There was a fantastic atmosphere right through the day; it was a real pleasure to be part of it. The Holiday Inn and Warmsworth Hall is a fantastic location for a wedding, offering the beauty of the historical hall itself and the friendly and helpful staff of the Holiday Inn complex.

Would Ya?! – Pre Wedding Photography Shoot {Anoushka & Chris}

‘WOULD YA?’ is what Chris’s T-Shirt said on his first date with Anoushka! We created his marriage proposal using a chalk board, lots of fun, smiles, and the beautiful county backdrop of the Priest House Hotel, near Castle Donnington. Anoushka and Chris tie the knot at the Priest House Hotel in the middle of December for their wedding. That seems like such a long way away, but it’ll be here before we all know it! We were joined on the pre-wedding photography shoot by Chris’s cute little son Charlie. My chalkboard came into use when he fell over on a gravel track. Luckily his little hands landed on the chalk board, preventing any grazes or tears!!
